If you're entering the Irish early years sector — or looking to advance within it — understanding the QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) framework is essential. QQI qualifications are the recognised currency of childcare in Ireland: they determine which roles you're eligible for, how Tusla counts you in staffing ratios, and how competitive your profile is to employers.
What is QQI?
QQI is Ireland's national awarding body for further and higher education and training. The National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) has 10 levels; most early years qualifications sit at Levels 5, 6, 7 and 8. Having a QQI qualification means your learning has been externally validated to a national standard — employers and Tusla can trust what it represents.
QQI Level 5 — Early Childhood Care and Education
Level 5 is the entry-level qualification for working in registered early years services in Ireland. The most common award at this level is the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). It covers child development, learning environments, health and safety, and practice placements.
- Roles accessible: Childcare Practitioner, Crèche Worker, Afterschool Assistant
- Tusla ratio: Counts as a qualified practitioner in ECCE and full-day services
- Duration: Typically 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time at an ETB or college
- Cost: Often free or heavily subsidised via SOLAS funding
QQI Level 6 — Advanced Certificate in Early Childhood Education
Level 6 is the key progression from Level 5 and opens the door to senior practitioner and leadership roles. It is the minimum requirement to work as a Room Leader in most services, and Tusla requires at least one Level 6 qualified staff member per room in ECCE-funded settings.
- Roles accessible: Room Leader, Senior Practitioner, Deputy Manager (with experience)
- Tusla ratio: Required as a lead practitioner in ECCE rooms
- Duration: 1–2 years, building on Level 5 qualifications
- Pathways: Available via Marino Institute of Education, IT Sligo, Athlone IT and ETBs nationally
On EarlyO, candidates with QQI Level 6 receive on average 3× more employer contacts than Level 5 candidates applying for the same types of roles. Upgrading your qualification is the single highest-ROI step you can take in your early years career.
QQI Level 7 and 8 — Degree and Honours Degree
Level 7 (Ordinary Degree) and Level 8 (Honours Degree) qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Care are typically offered by institutions such as Marino Institute of Education, Mary Immaculate College, TU Dublin and Dundalk IT. These qualifications are required for management-level roles and positions within publicly funded services with advanced programme delivery responsibilities.
- Level 7 roles: Childcare Manager, ECCE Coordinator, Sessional Service Manager
- Level 8 roles: Service Manager, Programme Lead, Policy or Research roles
- Both levels are accepted by Tusla for all staffing ratio purposes
- Some Level 8 programmes include a Montessori or Steiner specialisation
International Qualifications and Recognition
If you trained outside Ireland, your qualification may need to be assessed by QQI's Qualifications Recognition Service (formerly NARIC Ireland) before employers can count you in their Tusla ratios. EarlyO's candidate profiles allow you to indicate if your qualification is pending recognition, which alerts employers to the situation upfront rather than at the point of hire.
